How DTF Transfer Powder Works

As mentioned, DTF powder is an essential part of the process allowing us to transfer designs onto fabric by using a few specialized pieces of equipment.

First, the design is printed onto DTF film (a special type of PET film) using a specialized printer and ink.

Next, the transfer powder is applied to the film. It may also be referred to as hot-melt adhesive powder.

The entire thing is then placed into a curing dryer, where the adhesive transfer powder cures into place.

At this point, the designs are ready to use. If it is a singular design on the sheet, it is used as is. If there’s an entire gang sheet full of designs, they need to be cut out individually for use.

The design is then placed on the fabric, where a heat press is used to transfer it. As the DTF transfer powder heats up, it melts. This turns it into an effective adhesive that seals the design to the fabric.

Can You Do DTF Printing With a Regular Printer?

While some people think that you can print DTF transfers with a regular printer, then simply add the transfer powder, that’s simply not the case. You require a specialized printer that can work with the inks required and also print two layers simultaneously.

DTF transfer powder only adheres to the white ink. As a result, the printer needs to be able to print a white lower layer and a colored upper layer at the same time. Only with a specially designed printer, will the DTF powder be effective.

Are There Different Types of DTF Powder?

The main difference between different types of DTF transfer powder is that they’re available in an array of sizes. You can choose between fine, medium, and coarse transfer powder for different applications.
