Compare cost per square inch, not the starting price, because the two almost never point to the same sheet. The 22 inch sheet advertised from $2.99 is 22 x 6 inches, which works out to $0.0227 per square inch and is the most expensive way to buy that film. The same sheet settles at $0.0205 from 24 to 60 inches, while the 24 inch Max sheet runs $0.0188 to $0.0191 at every length it sells, so up to 13 feet the wider sheet wins. From 14 feet on it flips: the 22 inch sheet keeps dropping, down to $0.0174 per square inch at 25 feet, which no 24 inch length matches. The cheapest sheet depends on how much you are printing, and the calculator above picks it for you.

Pressed properly, a DTF transfer stretches with the fabric instead of sitting on top of it, and it holds through normal wear and washing. Cracking and peeling almost always trace back to the press rather than the film: not enough pressure, not enough heat, or lifting the carrier at the wrong moment. Press at 300 to 310 degrees Fahrenheit with firm, even pressure, and wash the garment inside out. Our DTF pressing instructions list the settings film by film.

Three worth knowing before you quote. A large solid print has more hand feel than screen print, so on a full front design the customer will feel the ink. You need a real heat press rather than an iron, because the film needs even pressure across the whole print. And you pay for the sheet, not per design, so a half empty sheet is money spent on nothing, which is the reason this calculator exists. For hard surfaces such as cups, glass and metal, DTF is the wrong product and UV DTF is the right one.

The Max 24 sheet, 24 inches wide, starts at $11.00 for a 24 x 24 inch sheet and holds near $0.019 per square inch at every length. The 22 inch sheet starts at $2.99 for a 22 x 6 inch sheet, sits at $0.0205 through the middle of its ladder and drops to $0.0174 at 300 inches. A 24 x 60 inch sheet is $27.20. You pay for the sheet, not per design, so the more art you fit on it the lower your cost per transfer.

Add your blank cost, your transfer cost, press labor and any other cost per piece. Then divide that total by 1 minus your target margin. Most apparel decorators aim for 50 to 65 percent gross margin on printed shirts. Below 40 percent it is hard to cover labor, reprints and slow months. Above 70 percent you are usually selling a niche product or a rush job. Use the margin slider to see what each level does to your total profit.

Almost always. On a 22 inch wide sheet the price per linear inch drops from $0.498 at 6 inches to $0.45 from 24 to 60 inches, and down to $0.3825 at 300 inches. Filling one long sheet instead of ordering several short ones is the single biggest saving available to a print shop.

It depends on your artwork. As a rough guide a 22 x 60 inch sheet holds around 20 to 30 adult chest prints of roughly 10 x 12 inches once you allow spacing between designs. Set your own number in the calculator and it will show your true cost per transfer.

UV DTF transfers start at $9.00 and go on hard surfaces such as cups, glass and metal instead of fabric. They hold up to hand washing with soap without lifting, but never put them in the dishwasher, the microwave or leave them soaking. They can go outdoors in a covered spot, away from direct sun and rain, though outdoors the life span is shorter and depends on the application. Never on fabric, on anything flexible or on a car. Standard DTF transfers print in 24 hours, and so do glitter and cold peel. Glow in the dark takes 48 to 72 hours. Same day printing is its own product, priced at $6.00 a foot, which runs from about 9 percent over the standard sheet at one foot to about 31 percent over it at 25 feet.
