How Does the DPI Checker Work?

Drop your image, tell us the print size, and you get a result in seconds. The check runs in your browser, so your file stays on your computer.

1

Drop Your File

PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF or AI. A single design or a full gang sheet.

2

Pick Your Print Size

A width in inches, or the gang sheet you're ordering. Not sure? We'll tell you the largest size that prints sharp.

3

Fix It or Order It

See what to fix and exactly where. If it's ready, order it right away.

What DPI Do You Need for DTF Transfers?

300 DPI at the size you print. That's 300 pixels for every inch, across and down.

The DPI number on its own doesn't tell you much. What matters is how many pixels your image has for the size you want. Divide the width in pixels by 300 and you get the widest it prints sharp: a 3,600 px wide image prints sharp up to 12 in.

Changing the DPI number doesn't add detail. A 1,200 px image set to 72 or 300 DPI still has 1,200 pixels, enough for 4 in. To print bigger, you need a bigger original.

How Do You Check the DPI of an Image?

The fastest way is the checker above, which also tells you the largest size your image prints sharp. To check by hand:

On Windows

Right-click the file and choose Properties, then the Details tab. Look for the width in pixels and Horizontal resolution.

On a Mac

Open the image in Preview, then Tools > Adjust Size. You'll see the width, height and resolution.

In Photoshop

Go to Image > Image Size. Uncheck Resample, set the resolution to 300 and read the real print size.

Quick math: width in pixels ÷ 300 = the widest it prints sharp. 3,600 px ÷ 300 = 12 in.

Why Does a Transparent Background Matter?

DTF prints every pixel in your file, white included. A white or colored box around your design prints as a solid patch of ink on the garment.

Save your artwork as a PNG with transparency. The checker shows transparent areas as a gray checkerboard, so a white box stands out right away. In Canva, the transparent background option needs a Canva Pro account.

Three More Things That Can Ruin a Print

Shadows, Glows and Fades

Semi-transparent areas print as dots or patchy white. Make them solid, or remove them.

Thin Lines and Small Text

Anything thinner than 0.5 mm may not transfer and can peel. Thicken strokes and small text before you export.

Stray Pixels

Specks and nearly invisible pixels outside your design still print. The checker marks them so you can delete them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the DPI checker free?

Yes. The DPI checker is free, with no account and no email needed. Drop a file, pick a print size and you get a result in seconds. You can check as many files as you like, as often as you like, before you place an order with us.

Do you keep my file?

No. The check runs in your browser, on your own computer, and your file is never uploaded to us. Nothing is stored on our side and nobody on our team sees it. When you close the tab, the result is gone. You only send us a file when you place an order.

What files can I check?

PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF and AI files up to 250 MB, as single designs or full gang sheets. AI files need to be saved with PDF compatibility, which is the default in Illustrator. Photoshop (PSD) files need to be exported as PNG first, with transparency turned on.

Can I check a full gang sheet?

Yes. Choose Gang sheet, then pick the sheet width and length you plan to order. We check the size, the resolution and every design on the sheet, and we pin each problem in inches from the top. If you split your sheet into several files, drop them all and we add up the lengths.

My file passed. Will it print exactly like my screen?

It's technically ready: the right size, 300 DPI and a clean background. Colors on a screen and on fabric can still vary slightly, because a screen shines light and a garment reflects it. No file check can change that, so we don't promise an exact color match.

What if my file doesn't pass?

You'll see what to fix and where it is on your design. Fix it in your design program, export it again and drop the new version to check it. You can also place your order with the file you have. We print files as they are uploaded.
